Illustrated Guide of Wild Edible Plants in the Nineveh Plains
Discover the Botanical and Cultural Treasures of Northern Iraq
The Nineveh Plains, a region steeped in history and cultural diversity, holds a vibrant tradition of gathering wild plants that has sustained its communities for generations. From the fertile plains to the rugged foothills, the ethno-religious communities of Christians, Yezidis, Shabaks, Turkmen, and Kaka’i have long relied on wild plants for food, medicine, animal husbandry, construction, crafts, and even spiritual practices.
This illustrated field guide is a culmination of an extensive research project spearheaded by a dedicated wild plants team from the University of Duhok and Indiana University, with support from USAID’s “Support to Traditional Cultural Practices in Northern Iraq” initiative. This initiative was designed to restore the traditional wild plant practices disrupted by conflict and displacement, focusing on the districts of Hamdaniya, Tal Kayf, and Bashiqa.
