Tel Kaif Plant Nursery

Nurturing Nature, Preserving Heritage

A Community Nursery for a Sustainable Future

Nurturing Nature and Preserving Tradition

A Collaborative Effort

The Tel Kaif Plant Nursery, nestled in the picturesque Nineveh District of Northern Iraq, is a testament to the power of collaboration. Established through a joint initiative involving researchers from the University of Duhok, Indiana University, and USAID's Support to Traditional Cultural Practices in Northern Iraq project, this nursery plays a crucial role in preserving and revitalizing the rich cultural heritage of the region's diverse communities.

A Haven for Native Plants

Spanning approximately 2 Dounams, the Tel Kaif Plant Nursery was carefully designed and constructed under the guidance of the University of Duhok. The nursery houses a carefully selected collection of culturally significant wild plants native to the Nineveh Plains, representing the diverse flora of the Christian, Yezidi, Shabak, Turkmen, and Kaka'i communities.

A Journey of Growth and Resilience

The project commenced in August 2022, and in May 2023, the Tel Kaif Municipality assumed ownership of the nursery. This transition marked a significant milestone in our efforts to empower local communities and ensure the long-term sustainability of this valuable resource.

Key Objectives:

A Partnership for Progress

A Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Duhok and the Tel Kaif Municipality formalizes our commitment to supporting cultural and agricultural practices in the region. This partnership ensures continued collaboration, knowledge sharing, and resource allocation to ensure the long-term success of the Tel Kaif Plant Nursery.

A Source of Hope

The Tel Kaif Plant Nursery stands as a symbol of resilience, hope, and the power of collaboration. Through its efforts, we are preserving the cultural heritage of the Nineveh Plains, promoting environmental sustainability, and fostering a brighter future for generations to come.

A Driving Force Behind
